The Artist

Inessa Burnell is a digital artist who has worked with authors, game developers, organizations, and individuals to create beautiful illustrations. In addition to digital art, she also explores watercolor, clay, markers, colored pencil, and other art mediums.

Along with running an illustration business, Inessa also worked as a Staffing Coordinator at her local art gallery and wore many hats to support the artist community. These hats included staffing, manual writing, admin, IT, graphics design, retail, event management, marketing, and gallery maintenance. She was also a member of the local artist and craftsmen guild, who offered insight and ideas to further its growth.

In her spare time, Inessa dabbles in music - singing, composing, and playing piano.

The Story

"It was not always my dream to become an illustrator and run my own business."

I grew up with the decision that I was going to be a performer in the musical arts - namely Broadway. I love acting and music, having been in many small-town productions as well as district and state choirs. At that point in my life, art was nothing more than a hobby that I greatly enjoyed. I pondered the idea of pursuing it as a career, but I felt that being an illustrator was not something I could do at the time.

I graduated with a bachelors degree in Food Science with a minor in Biology in 2019. I had worked in the food industry for a little under two years when I decided that I needed to follow my calling.

I love to create, to fashion shapes and colors into characters with stories of their own. It fills me with joy to see others' characters coming to life and it was one of the main reasons I decided to take freelance work.

My favorite part of working for others is learning about my clients' projects and characters. It has been a joy working with my clients. Each commissioned character has been unique, their backstories and circumstances enthralling. I focus on incorporating such details into my pieces as characters are more than just what they look like. Even if you do not commission me, feel free to tell me about your projects and characters. I love hearing about them!

In terms of personal work, I enjoy depicting modest elegance - some of which are angels - although not biblical ones. I leave the true appearance of angels to the Lord.

Character design is always a big part of my personal work, many thumbnails of various appearances and outfits sketched out before a final creation is realized.

I'm not one to go on about myself, but I hope that you have enjoyed my story. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, be it for commission work, advice, or simply to chat. Thank you for taking the time to get to know my story.

"The artistic journey thus far has been a wild one, but one filled with new experiences and learning opportunities."

It's never a dull day working as a freelancer. When I began my artistic journey, I was starry eyed with dreams of grandeur. I still am, in fact, but I have also expanded from my small scope of what success is.

If you have read this far, I thank you. This section is a more in-depth look into how I've gotten to where I am and is a lift of encouragement to those that wonder if it is too late to start.

In 2020, when I began my endeavors, I started out on what one would consider a "weak" foundation: I had no artistic training, no social media presence, and very little understanding of the industry I was about to enter. Tack on the lockdowns, mandates, and inflation and you've got a recipe for potential ruin.

But it's only over when you say it's over. You only fail when you decide to see it as failure.

In that time, I focused on polishing my skills and growing my online presence picking up odd jobs to make ends meet. I took on various kinds of commissions: book covers, character designs, personal commissions, art licensing, video game illustration, and web design. Nothing was outside of my scope.

In the spare moments I have, I volunteer at local art galleries and wear a myriad of hats. I am a graphic designer for posters and advertising, a gallery sitter, a manager, a manual writer and administrator, and one of many behind-the-scenes workers that ensure our gallery shows look and function professionally.

I've been fortunate to be able to explore so many career paths within the art genre. I have my parents, the art community, and God's support to thank for such amazing experiences with many more to come, I'm sure. I would be delighted if you would join me on this journey!
